Job Description: President-Elect

The major function of the President-Elect and Program Chair is to develop, organize, and prepare the annual conference program in consultation with other SMA officers. This role is pivotal to the ongoing success of the association, as the annual conference serves as the centerpiece of the association's product and service offerings.

The President-Elect and Program Chair

  • Selects individuals to chair tracks and competitions for the annual conference
  • Works with the Proceedings Editor to ensure a quality conference proceedings
  • Ensures an effective process of generating, evaluating and accepting/rejecting conference submissions
  • Develops the conference program
  • Coordinates all room assignments and catering requests with the Executive Director
  • Develops the presentation and associated visuals for the annual luncheon
  • Provides a report on the conference for the annual business meeting
  • Delivers files and information related to the conference to the following year's President Elect and Program Chair
  • Attends all SMA functions during the annual conference


Collaboration with SMA Officers and Workshop Facilitators


  • Doctoral Consortium is integrated within the Call for papers, conference program, and related communications
  • Select the Proceedings Editor

President and Two Most Recent SMA Fellows

  • Select the Distinguished Scholar, who make presentations at the annual conference

Vice-President of Electronic Communications

  • Website and email communications regarding the annual conference are timely and accurate


  • Ensure the Call for Papers is available for inclusion in the Spring Newsletter
  • Ensure annual conference program is available for inclusion in the Fall Newsletter


  • Ensure authors and participants with accepted papers, sessions, and presentations are provided the SMA membership form on acceptance of their work
  • Ensure all sponsors are given proper recognition in the conference program and SMA communications
  • Coordinate conference exhibitors' (i.e., locate of exhibitor area, placement of tables and materials, etc.)  

Executive Director     

  • Coordinate room scheduling, catering needs, and other logistical arrangements for the annual conference
  • Visit the conference site before final arrangements and room assignments are made

Workshop Facilitators

  • Work with pre-conference workshop facilitators, in coordination with SMA Officers, to ensure they are integrated within the conference program and related communications

Term of Service

  • Term of Service begins on the close of business of the Board of Executive meeting at the Annual Conference
  • Nominated by Board of Governors
  • One-year term
