The Society for Marketing Advances President is the chief executive and administrative officer for the organization. The President has general oversight of all aspects of the organization, including operations, finances, conference management, and strategic direction. This officeholder works in concert with other SMA officers to achieve the aims of the organization.

The President presides at all SMA meetings, but may delegate the responsibility to the President-Elect. He/she shall have whatever authority that may be required for managing the affairs of SMA during the interim between annual meetings, except that which may encroach on any specific grants of authority made by the Constitution to other officers.

The President:

  • Reports on the status of SMA at the annual business meeting.
  • Conducts the annual officer’s election, including tabulation of ballots.
  • Presides over the Annual Business Meeting.
  • Presides over the Officers’ Meeting.
  • Coordinates with the President-Elect and Executive Director on the Annual Awards Luncheon.
  • Appoints the Nominating Committee and presides over the Nominating Committee.
  • Appoints the Doctoral Consortium Chairs. 
  • Plans and hosts the Fellows’ Luncheon. The Luncheon is used as a forum for discussing SMA goals and priorities with the Fellows and soliciting their input and involvement in achieving the SMA mission.
  • Plans and hosts the President’s Reception (which is really the immediate Past-President at the time of the Reception).
  • Communicates regularly with SMA officers and other stakeholders as required.
  • Assists the President-Elect / Program Chair in planning and organizing the Annual Conference, as requested.
  • Works with both the Treasurer and the Secretary to ensure the financial integrity of SMA.
  • Assists, along with the most recent SMA Fellows, in the selection of the SMA Distinguished Scholars.
  • Attends all SMA functions during the annual conference.

Term of Service

  • Term of Service begins on the close of business of the Board of Executive meeting at the Annual Conference
  • Nominated by Board of Governors
  • One-year term
